Life changes you. And your wardrobe should reflect that. In the past month alone, I’ve spoken with men and women who are navigating significant weight loss, stepping into new roles at work, or rebuilding after a divorce. Each of them asked the same thing:
Where do I start? I want to feel polished and professional. Here’s a great place to start:
- Write down a few words that describe how you want to feel in your clothes.
- Then, write down three words that describe how you want to look.
A stylist I follow, Lauren Messiah, shared these words, which were so simple I had to share. This exercise may take thirty seconds or a few minutes, but it can shift everything. You likely have clothes in your closet that fit a past version of you, not who you are today, so it’s challenging to feel confident in what you’re wearing. You will show up differently when your wardrobe supports who you are today, your energy, and your goals.
Why Finding Your Style Isn’t Just “Nice to Have”
Your style is more than a surface-level statement. It reflects who you are, tells people where you’re going, and how you want to move through the world. If you’re stuck wearing outdated pieces that are a former version of yourself from two, five, or ten years ago, you likely lack confidence when you get dressed, or what you’re wearing feels off.
I recently listened to Brenda Johnston’s podcast episode “Why Your Energy Is the Foundation,” and it was eye-opening and made so much sense. When your energy is off, everything else is off, too. The same concept applies to what you wear. If you’re trying to fit into how you think you are supposed to show up or are wearing clothes that belong to your former self, nothing will feel “right.”
What Style Does for You (Beyond the Mirror)
- Increases confidence – When you have the right clothes that align with who you are now, you will carry yourself differently.
- Boosts clarity – You won’t find yourself second-guessing your outfit or yourself.
- Supports transformation – It’s easier to step into the next chapter when your wardrobe reflects the new you.
How to Start Rebuilding Your Style—From the Inside Out
- Define your internal and external style words – Think: confident, authentic, approachable, bold, polished, creative…)
- Audit your closet – What pieces do you currently have that align with the words you wrote down? Which pieces no longer serve you?
- Dress for where you’re going—not where you’ve been – Stop saving those pieces for “someday.” Finding confidence starts now with what you wear today.
It’s Not About Perfection—It’s About Presence
You don’t need a whole new wardrobe to reconnect or find your style. You need a few great pieces, a few minutes with yourself where you’re honest about how you want to show up, and the willingness to dress for the person you want to be.
All it takes is a few small tweaks, and they create a ripple effect that leads to big changes.
