They’re passing over the smartest woman in the room.
She knows the business forwards and backward. She had the expertise, the results and the institutional knowledge. Yet when a key leadership role opened up, decision-makers chose another woman. They chose a woman who knew less about the business and had less experience, but “had executive presence.”
The reason? The top candidate lacked executive presence and consistently showed up looking like she had rolled straight out of bed.
This isn’t a hypothetical story. This conversation happened earlier this month with a senior leader at a major company. The conversation made me sad and frustrated because it’s not an isolated story.
Earlier this month, a woman in the audience of a presentation I gave asked: “Do I really have to get dressed every day?” I wrote about it in last week’s blog, Showing Up Authentically – The Foundation of Trust in Leadership.
Showing up is no longer enough. You must show up to stand out.
The Silent Career Tax Most Women Pay
You’re smart. You work hard. You deliver results every single day. You keep your head down, handle what needs to get done, and hope your excellent work will speak for itself.
Here’s what I’ve learned after years of working with successful women: Your work rarely speaks for itself when people have already judged your potential based on how you look.
Executive presence isn’t about wearing a suit every single day. It’s not about becoming someone else. It’s not about becoming someone you’re not. It’s about being intentional about how you present yourself so that your appearance supports and strengthens your work and presences rather than undermining your credibility.
She lacked executive presence. Her appearance sent the message, “I don’t have the expertise.” Meanwhile, the other woman was signaling, “I’m ready for this role.” Research shows that you can be the expert, but if you don’t look like one, it can impact promotions and opportunies.
Perception creates opportunity. That’s why showing up to stand out matters
Style Is Strategy — Your Most Powerful Tool
I’m not telling you to wear heels to the grocery store or rebuild your entire wardrobe tomorrow.
Style becomes a game-changer when you choose pieces that:
- Feel authentic to you
- Boost your confidence
- Make you stand taller
- Help you become memorable for the right reasons
Think about what pieces you can add to your outfit, the small details that will not only elevate an outfit but encourage a compliment or comment:
- A statement brooch on a blazer or scarf
- A bold pop of color (a bright scarf, blouse, or shoes) that breaks your usual neutral palette
- A watch or earrings that feel uniquely “you”
- Shoes that help you walk with purpose
These pieces are meant to encourage a compliment or comment, which can lead to connection and conversation. When you wear pieces you genuinely love, getting dressed stops feeling like a chore and becomes a fun way to express yourself. Your closet becomes a source of inspiration rather than daily stress.
Do You Have a Few Go-To Pieces — Or Are You Starting From Scratch?
Do you fall into either one of two most common traps:
- The “I Have Nothing to Wear” Trap — Even though your closet is full, nothing feels right. Everything looks and feels safe, boring, or outdated.
- The “What I have is Fine” Trap — You look presentable but completely forgettable.
If either of these sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
The good news? You don’t need a total wardrobe overhaul. You need curated intention.
Ask yourself these questions today:
- Which pieces in your closet already feel authentic, give you confidence, or make you feel powerful?
- What small additions (accessories, colors, fits) could you make that would make you more memorable?
- How can you dress in a way that reflects the leader you want to become, rather than the role you currently have?
You don’t need to become a fashion expert. You simply need to stop treating your appearance as an afterthought. Put yourself on the priority list.
Change the Narrative: From Invisible to Unforgettable
When you dress with intention, you:
- Feel more confident
- Command greater respect
- Stay top-of-mind for new opportunities
- Stop being overlooked
The brilliant woman who knows the business inside out can still flip her story. A few intentional wardrobe upgrades, better grooming, and stronger posture can completely transform how others see her.
The same opportunity awaits you.
Start Where You Are
Feeling overwhelmed? Begin small this week:
- Pick one outfit that makes you feel unstoppable and wear it..
- Add one accessory that sparks joy or conversation.
- Replace one “I guess this is fine” item with something that actually fits and flatters you.
Style isn’t about perfection. It’s about wearing what feels authentic and gives you confidence, so you show up as the best version of yourself. The one that’s smart, capable, and memorable.
At the end of the day, the room notices before you even speak.
So the real question isn’t “Do I have to get dressed every day?”
The real question is: How do you want to show up?
