As a busy stylist, mom, and founder of Turnkey Style, my days and weeks can be whirlwind. Some days are filled with working with clients, curated closet edits, corporate presentations, networking, time with friends, and everything in between. I’ve learned over the years that a cluttered closet doesn’t just waste space; it wastes time and drains confidence. If you need help with decluttering, take a peek at last week’s blog here.
That’s why keeping my closet organized and filling it with quality pieces is a non-negotiable part of my routine. It’s not about letting go of everything or buying everything new; it’s about shopping smart, being intentional, and regularly maintaining your closet so you can show up powerfully every day.
Over the last few weeks, I shared tips about decluttering: letting go of what doesn’t serve you, identifying gaps, and creating space. Now, let’s shift to the rebuild phase, replacing and investing in key foundation pieces that deliver versatility without the overwhelm.

Rebuilding with Versatile Foundation Pieces

One of my absolute favorites? Layering pieces. Think blazers, cardigans, lady jackets, moto jackets, bombers, field jackets, or even a leveled-up dark denim jacket. Layering pieces can be the magic pieces in your closet that transform a basic tee-and-jeans combo into polished professional magic or elevate slacks and a sweater for a boardroom win.
I tend to invest more in quality blazers and jackets than almost anything else. Why? Because when I throw on a well-tailored blazer over a simple outfit, I instantly feel pulled together, no matter how rushed the morning was. It’s worth every penny as an investment piece that finishes the look and boosts my confidence.

Why Layering Pieces Are Game Changers

I shared this in a presentation last year to a team of accountants. One woman raised her hand: “I don’t like to wear layering pieces, so I don’t buy them.” I get it, some people feel like they don’t really need the layering piece. But I asked, “Do you ever run out the door, grab whatever’s handy, and then feel frumpy or like the outfit falls flat?” Her eyes widened: “OMG, that’s exactly what happens! Whatever I grab doesn’t match, and it ruins the whole look.” Exactly. You don’t need a closet full of layers, just 3 intentional ones that work with what you already own.
For you, the layers might be a field jacket, a classic blazer, and a soft cardigan. For others, it might be a dark denim jacket plus two versatile blazers, or all cardigans in neutrals. The key is being intentional: Take time to assess your closet, make a short list of the gaps and the items you need, and then shop specifically for pieces that align with how you want to show up.
A few of my personal favorites are:
Sculpted Stretch Blazer from Banana Republic Factory
Madelyn Blazer from J.Crew
One Button Blazer from Ann Taylor
Miller Dickey Jacket Veronica Beard

Tips for Smart Layering Investments:

  • Be intentional – Figure out the vibe you want (Polished? Corporate? Quirky? Effortless?) Look at your current wardrobe: What do your go-to outfits lack? A structured blazer to level up business casual? A cozy cardigan for transitional days? A pop of color to make you more memorable?
  • Use the Power of 2 – Before buying, ask yourself: Can I wear this for at least two seasons? Can you create at least two new outfits using what’s in your closet? If yes, it could be a winner.
  • Decide on the investment level — these can be wardrobe staples that offer endless versatility. Spend more on timeless pieces (like a quality blazer, cardigan, or other layering piece) that you’ll wear for years.

Weekly Wardrobe Routine:

  • Quick weekly check (5-10 minutes): Hang up worn items, spot anything that didn’t get worn (red flag for future declutter), and mentally note one small gap (e.g., “Need a neutral cardigan for layering”).
  • Monthly shopping audit (15-20 minutes): Review last month’s purchases. What worked? What didn’t? Use it to refine your list, add to cart only what fills real needs, not impulse buys.

The Payoff: More Time, Confidence, and Energy

Small steps over time can free up space in your closet as well as mental space and time. Less rummaging means more energy for career growth, client wins, moments with friends or family, or networking.
When your wardrobe has the right essentials and foundation pieces (like those 3 layering pieces), getting dressed feels more effortless, and how you show up for yourself ripples out to how you show up for everyone.
It’s time for a reset, and I know you don’t have time, so start small. Audit your layering section this week, apply the Power of 2 to one potential buy, and watch how it levels up your week.
