When you start your day, are you staring at an overflowing closet, feeling overwhelmed and hostage to clothes that no longer spark joy, fit you, or work for your life? Are you wearing the same outfits on repeat because you’re unsure how to put together new outfits? Decision fatigue is real.
There is nothing wrong with you; you’re not broken. It’s overwhelming, especially with a hundred other priorities. But here’s the truth: decluttering your closet doesn’t mean you need to do a drastic overhaul; it can be as simple as taking small steps to create space for a more confident version of you.
As a personal stylist with ten years of experience helping professionals, work-from-home moms, entrepreneurs, and more, from size 0 to 3X transform their wardrobes, I’ve seen firsthand how letting go of outdated pieces frees up mental, physical, and energetic space. It leads to better focus, stronger self-assurance, and even improved professional success. Think sharper focus in client meetings and effortless daily outfits.
In my book, The Style Advantage: I Say What HR Can’t, I share step-by-step tips for cleaning out your closet, drawing on real client stories and actionable steps to make the process easier. You can get started by implementing the tools I share below to curate a wardrobe that aligns with who you are today, saving you time and boosting your confidence. After years of working with clients, what I know for sure is that when you release what no longer serves you, you make room for growth.

Why Decluttering Your Closet Matters: The Real Benefits

Decluttering isn’t just about tidying up; it’s a game-changer for your daily life and mindset. As I share in my book:
“Holding onto ill-fitting clothes creates an energetic weight that can keep you stuck and standing still like an anchor. During a Closet Edit, I work with clients to assess their wardrobes, clear out what is outdated, and help them learn what to add so they have clothes that align with who they are and fit their lives and lifestyles.”
From body image struggles to imposter syndrome, I’ve worked with clients facing it all, including hoarders with untouched closets and busy pros who’ve never shopped intentionally. The result? They report less overwhelm, more outfit options with fewer items, and a ripple effect: higher productivity, better team collaboration, and even compliments that build rapport in professional settings. A streamlined closet means quicker mornings, reduced shopping regrets, and outfits that make you stand taller – literally transforming how you show up at work and home.

Easy-to-Do Tips to Declutter Without Regret

Transformation doesn’t happen overnight; it’s about consistent, bite-sized actions. Start here to overcome the paralysis and build momentum:

Start Small with the Hanger Trick:

Overwhelmed? Turn all your hangers backward. As you wear an item, flip the hanger forward when you put it back. After 30-60 days (adjust for seasons), it’s crystal clear what’s in rotation and what’s collecting dust. Tackle just 1-2 unworn pieces daily. This low-pressure method will make decluttering feel more achievable, freeing up space without guilt.

Ask These 4 Key Questions: For each item, be honest:

    • Do I love it?
    • Does it fit me right now?
    • Does it give me confidence and make me stand taller?
    • Would I buy it again today?

If you answered “no” to any of the questions above, it’s time to let the item go. I know, you may not be quite ready. So, put the item(s) in a bag and store them somewhere else (like the garage) for 30-60 days. Check back at the 30 and 60 day mark, see if the items fit, and ask yourself: Does it align with who you are and who you want to be? Remember, you’re not the same person from 2, 5, or 10 years ago. Those old jeans or jackets aren’t just taking closet space; they’re holding mental real estate that could be used for fresh opportunities.

Replace with Intention:

Build a Power Wardrobe: As you purge, make a list of needs (e.g., if tops go, note versatile replacements). Focus on pieces that “light you up” and create “power outfits,” think about pieces that boost your confidence and feel authentic to who you are today. When shopping, use the “Power of Two” rule: Can it work for two seasons? Can it make two new outfits with what you already own? This ensures every addition enhances your life, reducing future clutter and maximizing your investment.

Over the years, I have worked with clients from all walks of life, from those battling weight-loss journeys to high achievers to those streamlining for hybrid work. My job is not to judge or criticize but to provide clarity and guide you to focus on what works for your current body, lifestyle, and goals.

Overcoming Common Hurdles: You’re Not Alone

If you’re on a weight loss path and clinging to “someday” clothes, I get it. I’ve been there with body issues and size fluctuations. I’ve been everything from a size 10 to 18+, and I’ve gone from trying to hide my body with clothes to finding pieces that fit and make me look slimmer. Letting go creates energetic freedom, allowing you to step into authenticity and confidence. And if imposter syndrome creeps in? A curated closet reinforces your worth, helping you show up as the leader you are.
