Every day, you choose to get up and get dressed with intention or rush out the door haphazardly. Your outfit tells a story, but is it the story you actually want the world to hear and see?
On Brenda Johnston’s Limitless Life Podcast, she shared a powerful truth: ‘Style isn’t about fashion, it’s about frequency. And if your wardrobe still reflects the version of you who played it safe, played small, or tried to ‘look the part,’ you’re stuck in the energy of a past version of yourself.”
You’re not the same person you were ten, five, or even two years ago, yet I bet your closet likely holds clothes from those past versions of you (that you’re not wearing), and they’re taking up valuable space. The reality is you’ve grown, evolved, and worked hard. You’re a rockstar, and you’ve come so far and achieved so much; your style should reflect the present and powerful version of you, who has so much more success ahead.
Here are three ways you can stop wasting energy on the old you and start showing up as the confident, successful person you are:
1. Assess & Let Go of the Old You
Your closet likely holds stories and baggage. You can start by removing the pieces that belong to the outdated version of you. If a piece makes you shrink or “futz,” requires you to ‘someday’ fit into it, if you second-guess yourself, or feel like you’re “pretending” to be something you’re not, it’s time to let it go. Clearing that space frees you to invest in the wardrobe that matches who you are now.
2. Define How You Want to Stand Out
Think of your wardrobe as part of your brand. Do you want to be known for bold color, unique details, or timeless classics? Decide how you want to be recognized and show up consistently. Taking time to decide how you want to show up consistently will make getting dressed easier, and it will also allow you to create a visual signature that communicates confidence and credibility. When you know how you want to show up, shopping becomes easier and more intentional.
3. Create Your Power Pieces
Before you go shopping, think about which outfits make you feel unstoppable. It might be a blazer that fits like it was made for you, a dress that receives compliments every time, a bright-colored top, fun shoes, or a pair of tailored trousers that make you feel in charge. Identify those power pieces and intentionally build more of them into your wardrobe. Having go-to outfits that give you energy means you never waste time wishing you’d worn something different. Building a capsule wardrobe around your power pieces will help eliminate decision fatigue, and you will have outfits that energize you.
You may find making changes can feel challenging at the start, but over time, you will make great strides. In fact, think about what your younger self would say; they would be in awe of how far you’ve come. You are an accomplished professional who is worthy. It’s time to start dressing for the person you are today, where you are right now, and start investing in a wardrobe that reflects the successful, bold, unstoppable person you are.
Because the truth is: you are worth it. And the world is waiting to see you shine.
